Overview

The Story Co. agency needed to capture approximately 30 distinct locations within a 10– to 12-hour production window. Attempting this on a university campus or across practical locations would require constant company moves, extensive set redressing, and complex permitting. Instead, the production was executed entirely within our virtual production soundstage, condensing what would have been weeks of location moves into a tightly coordinated two-day shoot.

Challenge

With limited time and a large number of scene setups, traditional location-based production simply could not deliver the required scale, efficiency, or variety. Capturing this footage in practical locations would have made the schedule unworkable — and creative compromises unavoidable.

Strategy & Approach

An OSU OAIRE professor delivered a large volume of content directly to camera, with rapid wardrobe changes taking place just 20 feet from set. This approach eliminated the downtime typically caused by company moves or location resets. Concurrently, our virtual art department worked hand-in-hand with the production and practical art teams to swap and dress environments in real time, transitioning seamlessly between scenes

Outcomes

Over the course of the shoot, the team rotated through approximately 12 fully rendered 3D environments on the LED wall and more than 20 additional 2D environments — all without interrupting performance or camera flow. This integrated approach allowed the agency to achieve extensive visual variety, maintain creative consistency, and stay on schedule — something that would have been impossible using traditional locations.
