One Set Studio produced a heartfelt success story for the 2023 OKDHS DDS Conference to highlight Self-Directed Services to hundreds of staff and providers. The film features Jason, a charismatic individual whose life demonstrates how state-supported independence and tailored modifications can empower those with developmental disabilities to live their best lives.
The team faced a condensed production timeline and a limited budget. After Jason was discovered at the Special Olympics, the team made a rapid pivot to capture his story in action. The production needed to document diverse environments — from home modifications to aquatic therapy — without the luxury of extended pre-production or high-cost location fees.
We used a documentary-style approach, moving with Jason through his hometown where he is rightly celebrated as a local hero. Filming took place at his home, in his modified vehicle, and at an indoor pool to showcase his mobility and inclusion. This “day-in-the-life” perspective authentically captured the infectious joy shared by Jason and his family. Using lightweight field equipment allowed the team to maintain a small footprint while filming across multiple locations.
The film premiered to 800+ attendees, as a celebration of progress to inspire the leverage of Self-Directed Services. Despite a modest budget, the project achieved international award recognition due to polished execution and thoughtful emotional handling. The video successfully advocated for the important work being done around Self-Directed Services in Oklahoma, proving that mission-driven storytelling can deliver extraordinary results.
